My friends are all strange.Right now I’m living at Brookside, a place for people like me. I’ve met a kitty girl, a brooding beautiful boy, one who can’t be touched, and others. My new friends. Strange people. People like me.I’ve always been different, but lately, more so. My hands sometimes don’t seem to be attached to the rest of me. I cut up all of my clothes. I’m hot, so hot, all of the time. If I sleep, a wizard haunts every dream. I don’t sleep. Sometimes I want to run, but where do you run to when you’re trying to escape your own mind? I don’t know if I’ll ever be the same. I’m smart. I’m nice, sometimes. I just want to be normal(ish). But, right now, my friends are all strange… Like me.Dark, funny, snarky, seventeen-year-old Becca struggles to cope with mental illness in My Friends Are All Strange, the gripping contemporary young adult companion novel to Normalish.
DISCLAIMER: I received an e-ARC of this book as part of this tour.
This is definitely something to grab your attention. The main character's way of turning her situation around and making it appear as if she is "normal" is rather humorous, even a bit touching at some parts. It's definitely dark, I'll tell you that. Becca's struggles are heartbreaking. I honestly do not know how I would feel if someone I knew suffered this way. I actually am at a loss for more words. When I read a book with topics like this, I tend to take it a little deeper than I let on. But I enjoyed reading it all the same.
I will say that I hope you feel you can handle topics such as mental illness, because this is a strong read. If you prefer avoiding such topics, that's fine. I personally like reading about this topic because it always gives me a better perspective, fiction or fact, of the people who might suffer from this.
About the AuthorCalifornia native Margaret Lesh lives in a narrow canyon populated by herds of wild burro and packs of coyote. The canyon is also populated with her creative, handsome husband, her feisty mother-in-law, her not-brave-at-all Border Collie, Echo, and sometimes her son (who is away at college. And she is not quite sure how that all happened so fast). She writes books to entertain young and not-so-young readers as well as herself. She believes tacos are magic.
Hadassah, thank you so much for taking the time to read and review My Friends Are All Strange. I so appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI just saw on your profile that you're a big sister to over fifteen kids! That is a story right there. Many stories. My goodness. You'll have to write your memoirs one day. :)
I'd love to see this review up on Amazon, if you have the chance.
Thank you again.
All best to you and your many siblings!
Margaret
You're most welcome, Margaret! :D
DeleteYes, hehehe! And, actually, my younger sister (aspiring author) is already writing a memoir, which is going to have two volumes. She completed the first volume and has been working to edit/proof it.
I knew I forgot something! LOL I will have it up there ASAP.
Thank you, and best wishes to you!
Good for her! I grew up with four siblings and so many stories to tell. Constant chaos, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
DeleteThank you so much for posting! :)
