The Viper and the Urchin by @CelineJeanJean #BookBlitz #BookTour

The Viper and the Urchin
by Celine Jeanjean
Release Date: July 27th 2015

Summary from Goodreads:

Being Damsport's most elegant assassin is hard work. There's tailoring to consider, devilish poisons to concoct, secret identities to maintain... But most importantly, Longinus has to keep his fear of blood hidden or his reputation will be ruined. So, when a scrawny urchin girl threatens to expose his phobia unless he teaches her swordsmanship, he has no choice but to comply.

It doesn't take long for Rory to realise that her new trainer has more eccentricities than she has fleas. But she'll put up with anything, no matter how frustrating, to become a swordswoman like her childhood hero.

What she's not prepared for is a copycat assassin who seeks to replace Longinus, and who hires Rory's old partner in crime to do away with her, as well. Rory and Longinus must set their differences aside and try to work together if they're to stop the copycat. But darker forces than they realise are at play, and with time running out, the unlikely duo find themselves the last line of defence against a powerful enemy who seeks to bring Damsport to its knees.

Character Interview

An Interview with Longinus

Thank you for doing this interview Longinus! It’s a pleasure to have you here.

Well of course it is. I’d love to reciprocate, but I don’t yet know whether your questions will be any good.

Oh, haha. No pressure!

*blank face*

O-kay, let’s get right to it then. You’re afraid of blood – isn't that a bit unusual for an assassin?

I’m not in the habit of enquiring after my colleagues’ thoughts on blood. For all I know it’s a widespread sentiment in our line of work. And I don’t see why it wouldn't be. After all, no assassin worthy of the name would lower himself to use crude weapons like swords or knives – or in fact any other method that would result in bloodshed. They are the marks of an amateur.

There are many methods available to the elegant assassin – strangulation is adequate, as is drowning I suppose – but poison is obviously the most refined and therefore the only one worth considering.

Isn't poison a little limited though?

Oh how little you know – the varieties of poisons are endless! You see the mark of a great assassin isn't just in the execution of difficult jobs, but also in the variety of methods used. Poison, in its infinite variations is therefore the superior weapon.

For example, say I needed to kill someone in their sleep. Why, I have a poison for every possible sleeping position. There’s Deafly Silence – an auricular poison – that is applied with a funnel in the ear. Then Smells Like Death is an olfactory poison that can be waved under the sleeper’s nose, and –

Yes, alright. Let’s not go through every poison there is. Tell me about Rory. You two have a bit of a tricky relationship.

*Longinus sighs*

That girl will be the death of me. I have never in all my years met someone as rude and annoying.  I am nothing if not a patient and generous soul –

Really?

A-hem! *Longinus glares*

Sorry.

As I was saying, I am nothing if not a patient and generous soul, but she tests even my limits. She is dirty, uneducated, crass, and worse she is grammatically incorrect. But I have to admit she has her uses, and an assassin such as myself should really have an assistant. So, I put up with her.

It’s for her good too. No doubt you’ll have noticed the effect my presence has had on her? She was a filthy street urchin when I first met her, and I’m sure you’d agree that she is now vastly improved. Almost respectable. It’s inevitable really: a man of my culture and elegance cannot help but elevate those around him.

Err, yes... I feel elevated as we speak.

You’re welcome.

Wait, why are you saying Rory’s your assistant? Isn’t she blackmailing you?

*stony face* No comment.

Okay, I guess I’ll move on. I understand you write?

Indeed I do! Mostly pamphlets detailing the exploits of the Viper – the name under which I work. I began writing them for purely practical reasons: to spread the word of my kills and build up my reputation. But, as with everything I do, I infuse them with such poetry that they are truly delightful little literary gems.

I wanted to ask –

Have you noted the expression ‘literary gems’? I don’t want to be misquoted now. Literary gem is the best way to describe my writing.

Yes, yes – I have it written just there.

Good.

I wanted to ask you about your fear of blood again. What caused that? Was it a trauma of some kind? Some difficult experience…

*Longinus looks troubled*

I don’t mean to pry, but if you could –

I have to go. I’m afraid I have a pressing appointment. *Longinus stands*

But I’m not finished!

Terrible shame, I’m sure, but I must dash. Especially if you’re resorting to this sensationalist nonsense. You could have questioned me about my poetry, you could have dug further into my skill with poison, or even asked me about my views on philosophy – and they are extensive – but no, you had to go there.

Well, I don’t know what I was expecting from someone so common. I’d ask you not to contact me again – I shan’t be giving any more interviews. Goodbye.

*Longinus leaves*

About the Author

Celine Jeanjean is French, grew up in the UK and now lives in Hong Kong. That makes her a tad confused about where she is from. During her time in Asia she’s watched the sun rise over Angkor Wat, lost her shoes in Vietnam, and fallen off a bamboo raft in China. Celine writes stories that feature quirky characters and misfits, and her books are a mixture of steampunk, fantasy and humour.

Finding Perfect (Entangled Crush) by @KendraHighley @entangledpub #Review

Finding Perfect (Entangled Crush)
by: Kendra Highley
Release Date: September 14th, 2015

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Description: A story about a girl who tries to live up to her parents' expectations, and bright young man who is every bit of smart and sweet.

Goodreads

DISCLAIMER: I received an e-ARC of this book (provided through NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review. (I would have posted this right away, but I was awaiting some details so that I could post this with the cover)

Characters/Plot: I summed up the book, I added the description, because this book is not yet released, and there is not much detail about this book anywhere, except in NetGalley, which you can go read for yourself, if approved. *evil grin*

Ben and Paige are amazing characters. I loved them so, so much. I know I say that a lot, but it is the truth and I don't know how else to say it. Paige is an overachiever, but only to the extent that she is trying to please her parents, which I relate to, to an extent. She is a vivid character and I love how she meets Ben. Ben Franklin (yes, he's related) is smart, funny, and sweet. Mix him with Paige, and you've got what is the CUTEST of couples! ♥ The deal at the beginning involved Paige getting help in calculus,  in exchange that she helps Ben score a date with her friend, Zoey. Paige is often stuck in Zoey's shadow, as she thinks every guy turns their head in Zoey's direction, not hers. Not to give too much away, but that is only the beginning. The cover ties into the plot, read it for yourself to see why.

My Honest Opinions/Thoughts: I was easily drawn into this book, because it's got every inch of early stages of puppy-love, and arg! I L♥VED it. Though it did take me a while to get going, because I've been so busy. I love Ben, I love Paige; totally have another new book-ship.

Extra: I think Kendra has a winner with this book. I think her efforts are going to pay off. ♥ I really like her writing and I will definitely check out more of her work in the future. And, for those of you who pick up this book, read it to the very end. View the dedications, you will be flooded with feels (hopefully I do not give away too much). - I am hoping to take part in the upcoming book blitz, so keep an eye open for that!

Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru by @teralynnchilds #Review #NonSpoiler

Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru (Entangled Crush)
by: Tera Lynn Childs
Release Date: September 14th, 2015

My Rating:

Description: When life gives you a blank canvas, make art.

Sloane Whitaker hates everything about moving to Texas. She hates leaving behind her friends and half her family in New York, starting over senior year at Austin’s NextGen Academy, and having to say she lives in Texas. Most of all, she hates that it’s all her fault. If she wants to earn her way back to the Big Apple, she has to prove she can still be the perfect daughter.

Which means no vandalism art, no trouble at school, and absolutely no Tru Dorsey, her serial screw-up neighbor, who loves nothing more than pushing her buttons.

But from the moment he vaults onto the roof outside her bedroom, there is something about him that makes her want to break every rule. Suddenly it’ s not the ten things she hates about Tru that are at the top of her list. It’s the ten reasons she doesn’t want to be without him.
Goodreads

DISCLAIMER: I received an e-ARC of this book (provided through NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review. Non-spoiler review, unless you count small hints. ;)

Characters/Plot: Sloane is very artistic. Tru is an amazing work of creativity. Both characters, when mixed together, its all book feels from there. The moment Tru is introduced for the first time, you fall in love with him right away. Though Tru gives off the impression that he is just a cocky jerk, its all a front. The story is told in Sloane's perspective, but then it jumps to third to show where Tru's mind is, without actually being told from his mind. I really liked Sloane's determination, and I melted when Tru made a connection between Slaone and himself. He saw how he felt inside as how she was in a literal sense. Lost.

My Honest Opinions/Thoughts: I want to read this book again and again! I loved it, and if you don't believe me, ask my sisters what my reactions to a screen were. This book is so much deeper than the cover. I half expected it to be light-hearted (which I still love), but it was epic! ♥

Extra: If you followed my GoodReads notes, you will know that I already have a picture of what Tru looks like in my head. So, this will be the second time that I have visuals in my review. Literally the first face that popped into my mind was Booboo Stewart.

Booboo Stewart - ♥
See what I mean? You have to read the book, and see who pops to your mind. I just kept seeing Booboo whenever Tru came back into play. *heart flutters*

As a major movie addict, I did imagine this as a movie, and it would be awesome. ♥

Sloane was a little harder for me to imagine, but I think I may have found a good fit. Because Sloane very artistic/rebellious, I thought this gif fit pretty good, though I do not know what her hair is like.

Be sure to grab your copy when it comes out, I know that I will adding it to the cart. ♥

Chronicles of a Reluctant Necromancer Book Three: Ward Against Disaster - (Series Review Tour) @melaniecard @entangledteen

Ward Against Disaster (Chronicles of a Reluctant Necromancer #3)Ward Against Disaster by Melanie Card
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Release Date: 01/19/14
Entangled Teen
276 pages

Description: Ward de'Ath should be dead by now. Instead, he’s chasing after a soul-eating creature—that he unleashed— and is bent on stopping her before she slaughters more innocents. Fortunately, Celia Carlyle remains by his side, a nobleman's gorgeous and deadly daughter, who is…well, dead.

Celia claims she’ll champion Ward wherever he goes, even when she thinks his quest is hopeless. He can only hope her pledge comes from her heart, and not because she’s bound to him through his magic.
When they enter Dulthyne, they stumble upon a dark power that threatens the entire town. Ward, with his unreliable necromancy, is determined to help but finds himself ensnared in the lure of white-hot magic…blood magic he struggles to resist. But if Celia’s love is a lie, it might just doom his soul to the dark arts forever.

Disclaimer: I received a galley in exchange for an honest review. (Provided by NetGalley) – I do not usually read dark/paranormal, but the plot of this story was very intriguing, and I have been expanding my preferred readings, to open doors to more reviews.

Characters/Plots:
Wow, I was surprised at how this book slowly unfolded. The monstrosity, Allette, brings horrible, unwanted death. Ward has definitely stepped up to the plate, and Celia kind of backed down, a little, in a way. The fight scene where Ward is finally caught up to Allette was amazing.

My Honest Opinions/Thoughts: I definitely was able to slow down more to read this book, and wow! I am so glad I did. I still felt a little out of context, because I don’t black magic style books, but the plot for this epic. I love the comradeship/romance that goes on between Ward and Celia. I love how they know what the other is thinking at times, and even at the times when they didn’t it seemed to work out. You definitely need to like this sort of content to read it. If you like that sort of thing, this book is definitely for you. I gave this story 4/5 stars because I did enjoy the book, but I do not actually like this sort of content.

About Melanie Card: “I have always been drawn to storytelling. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t telling a story in my head or on paper. In grade school, we had journal writing time which I turned into story telling time, weaving tales of magic and adventure that mimicked the fairy tales and myths that I loved to read. It was there, with the help of two very special teachers, that I nurtured this love and started my journey as a writer.
I write fantasy, paranormal romance, and everything in between, seasoned with a good dash of adventure and mystery. Join me on my tales of magic, adventure, and romance.”
