MY HEART WANTS A KIND OF JUSTICE THE LAW CAN’T GIVE
On a dark, rainy night I drove my overstuffed junker car back to a town I never expected to see again.
And when I needed a rescue by the side of the road, a six-foot tall piece of hot, unfinished business named Mark was what the universe sent me.
Three years earlier I’d fled town (and Mark) to follow my wrongly-convicted father to his federal prison, working crappy jobs to stay afloat and visit him every second I could. But now Dad’s dead and I’m mysteriously offered the best job of my life at the college where his life blew up when he was accused of a crime he didn’t commit.
Someone wants me here. Desperately.
I’m hoping it’s Mark.
Because if it’s not, I’m in more danger than I ever imagined.
And if it is?
Mark may be the most dangerous choice of all.

EXCERPT:
It’s him. Mark. My ex-boyfriend.
I can’t look. I just…can’t. Too many memories are in that face. That rugged, handsome face. My heart jumps up like an excited puppy, wagging in my chest, eager to be acknowledged and touched. The rest of me shoves it down.Officer Mark Paulson stands in front of me in uniform, soaking wet, his hat making the rain fall in streaks in front of him. The curtain of water catches my eye. It’s easier to watch it than to stare at him. If I did stare, though, I know what I would see.
Broad shoulders under that crisp black uniform shirt. A thin scar running under his jaw, where he was knifed in a fight when he did a tour in Afghanistan. Wet, blonde hair I used to love to stroke. Gentle hands that once cupped my face. Eyes that could draw me in with a hot breath. The tender taste of lips meant only for me.
He speaks, pulling me out of the memory. Stop it, Carrie, I think. Stop with the dreams you destroyed.
“You okay?” he asks, looking around swiftly. He’s worried. That’s really touching. It’s nice to know he cares. Three years is long enough for him to stop hating me, right?
And I know he hates me.
He has to. I disappeared one day and never said goodbye to him. When you do that to someone, they tend to really resent it. Especially if they love you.
“I’m, uh…” My voice fails me as I watch the water fall in sheets down his cap. “My tire blew.”
He thumps his hand on the car door. “She’s still around, huh?” I know he means the car, but it feels like a dig. Like he’s cutting into me for leaving.
Like he’s still hurt.
If he’s still hurt, that means the feelings haven’t faded, and if his feelings are still that strong, then mine make more sense. I thought when I left town I would shed so much damage and hurt. Because leaving town meant I could leave behind so much pain.
But leaving Mark? That meant the pain came with me.
I start to shiver. It’s not from the cold and the rain. Those arms. The rain drops gather and ripple down his taut muscles, dotted with a sprinkling of dark hair. I remember when I was in those arms.
I remember every single time he touched me.

DISCLAMIER: I received an e-ARC (From Sourcebooks, via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review and for my participation in a current blog tour SPOTLIGHT.
My Review for DIMILY #1
I previously read DIMILY #1 and I quote myself: "My cup of Joe. ♥ I need to read the next book, ASAP!" My wish came true! I read it in one day because I could not wait, and I am still trying to get over the cliffhanger! I will do my best to keep the spoilers at bay. If you have not read the first book, do not read any further. You can come back once you have been caught up. ☺
Did I Mention I Need You? picks up from the last book, two years after Tyler, Eden step-brother, leaves for New York. Of course, Eden and Tyler have kept in contact, both hoping the distance will keep their affections for each other at bay, and possibly get over each other. To keep her mind off Tyler, Eden is dating Dean, Tyler's best friend. Yes, a whole lotta stuff be happening.
Tyler has invited Eden to visit him in New York for the summer, so you can imagine what goes down. Yep, the attraction between them is there, though they both have doubt about whether the other has finally gotten over the feelings. The reunion was so sweet and heartwarming. If there were pictures in the book, you can imagine it was Picture Perfect.
Just like this, but in an airport setting, and imagine "Tyler" grinning, and Eden on the verge of happy tears, to a degree.
Now, to keep from giving too much away, let's just say, there are TONS of bumps that Tyler and Eden come to, it is LITERALLY heart-wrenching! This book will have you on an emotional roller coaster of book feels.
I love the version of the book cover that is pictured above, but there is another version of the cover, and I believe it is the UK edition.
This book. That is all I can truly say, this book! There is a massive climax that takes place, and a massive cliffhanger! If you were to ask my sister, she would tell you that I was talking to my laptop screen, and freaking out! Yes, this book will have you on that roller coaster that makes you feel that you should stop reading to prevent your heart from breaking, but its too AMAZING to put down that you must continue reading.
Now, to recap a little bit of the first novel, here is the summary and the two covers. And you will find the cover for the third book AFTER the author bio.

Praise for Did I Mention I Love You?
“Readers will root for them, like they would with Edward and Bella—the mutual attraction and need for one another is palpable. It rings of passion, excitement, and first love.” –VOYA Magazine
“An edgy young adult romance with dark layers” –The Examiner
“A believable coming-of-age story and an unconventional romance, set against a present-day California summer... . The fallout of divorce, the insidiousness of substance abuse and family secrets, and especially the pangs of first love drive this emotionally resonant tale.” – Publishers Weekly
“Written in first person, Maskame’s trilogy opener is an excellent portrayal of a teenage girl’s life in the 21st century. Eden has to adjust to her blended family, try to feel pretty, be body conscious, and make friends, all while falling in love for the first time. She is someone all young people can relate to...Romance fans will be captivated by Eden and her journey to finding herself and true love.” –School Library Journal
Love is everything but expected.
Eden Munro came to California for a summer of sun, sand, and celebrities- what better way to forget about the drama back home? Until she meets her new family of strangers; a dad she hasn’t seen in three years, a stepmonster, and three stepbrothers.
Eden gets her own room in her dad’s fancy house in Santa Monica. A room right next door to her oldest stepbrother. Tyler Bruce. Whom she cannot stand. He has angry blue eyes and an ego bigger than a Beverly Hills mansion. She’s never felt such intense dislike for someone. But the two are constantly thrown together as his group of friends pulls her into their world of rule-breaking, partying, and pier-hanging
And the more she tries to understand what makes Tyler burn hotter than the California sun, the more Eden finds herself falling for the one person she shouldn’t…

Between the Notes by Sharon Huss Roat @sharonwrote @harperteen #BookBlitz
Between the Notes
Release Date: 06/16/15
Harper Teen
382 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
When Ivy Emerson’s family
loses their house—complete with her beloved piano—the fear of what’s to come
seizes her like a bad case of stage fright. Only this isn’t one of her single,
terrifying performances. It’s her life.
And it isn’t pretty.
Ivy is forced to move with her family out of their affluent neighborhood to Lakeside, also known as “the wrong side of the tracks.” Hiding the truth from her friends—and the cute new guy in school, who may have secrets of his own—seems like a good idea at first. But when a bad boy next door threatens to ruin everything, Ivy’s carefully crafted lies begin to unravel . . . and there is no way to stop them.
As things get to the breaking point, Ivy turns to her music, some unlikely new friends, and the trusting heart of her disabled little brother. She may be surprised that not everyone is who she thought they were . . . including herself.
Debut author Sharon Huss Roat crafts a charming and timely story of what happens when life as you know it flips completely upside down.

A YA Author’s Guide to Holiday Gift

for everyone this year! (Seriously. Go to one store and find something for
every single person on your list. How awesome is that?) To make your shopping
easier, I’ve put together a few suggestions:
For teen girls who love to read: BETWEEN THE
NOTES by Sharon Huss Roat (ahem, moi.) People are saying it’s “unputdownable”
and “stunning” and “the best book you’ll ever read” (okay, I may have made up that
last one). My neighbor really liked it, though, and she’s a teenage girl.
For teen boys who love to read: Also BETWEEN THE
NOTES! Girls read about boys all the time,
yet boys are somehow expected to read only “boy books?” That’s just wrong,
folks. Boys need to read about girls, too. And they would if y’all would stop
telling them, “That’s a girl book.” I am not the first to say it: There are no
boy books or girl books, just books.
For teens who feel misunderstood: You’ll never
believe this, but Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) actually suggested BETWEEN
THE NOTES for just those readers. They wrote, “Teens who feel misunderstood by their parents or their friends, and
feel slighted by the world at large, will find a true champion in Ivy.” What can I say? This is getting embarrassing.
For
anyone who likes music: Did you happen
to notice the piano keys in the window on the cover of BETWEEN THE NOTES? In
addition to playing the piano, Ivy also makes friends with a badass clarinet
player, listens to Swedish death metal with the boy next door, and fights off
an ‘80s playlist with Broadway show tunes! What more could a music-loving
reader want?
If one book is not enough for the avid readers on your list, please be advised that BETWEEN THE NOTES pairs up nicely with any number of other YA novels. Here are few of my favorite reads of 2015 that would also make amazing gifts:

EXCERPT:
I swung back and forth for a while, letting the breeze settle my nerves. I don’t know how long I was out there for, but eventually, I heard a car pull up. The door shut and footsteps thumped up the stairs.“Hello,” a masculine voice drifted towards me.
I opened my eyes and was greeted with crystal blue eyes, messy brown hair, a lopsided smirk and six feet of tall, lean man.
“Er…um…hi,” I croaked out. Okay…the man was gorgeous. Pretty sure I was blushing.
“Haley?” gorgeous mystery man asked.
I nodded. I didn’t know who this guy was, but he seemed to know me. And if I opened my mouth to ask him, I’m sure I would sound like an idiot again.
He gave me that adorable lopsided grin again. “Eli.” He pointed at himself, like I should know who he was. Eli was leaning against the porch railing, staring at me with amusement in his eyes. Maybe if he wasn’t so damn attractive I could get my brain to start working again. But for now, I could only stare.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked. “The four of us hung out together when I roomed with Noah in the dorms.”
Holy shit. This man in front of me couldn’t be Noah’s roommate. There was no possible way he was the same guy. I hung out with the kid all the time, and this guy…no, not him. Not him at all.
“You look nothing like you did freshman year.” I blurted out. Then quickly turned red and clamped my hand over my mouth.
Oh God, he’s going to think you are the biggest idiot.
Eli laughed. “I was a lot scrawnier back then. Had longer hair. Wore thick framed glasses all the time.” His voice still sounded the same. That was something at least. “When I moved back home to help my mom, I worked with my uncle at his construction company. I guess that helped me gain a little muscle.” He shrugged like he was not confident with how he looked.
The more I stared at him, the more he was becoming familiar. Freshman year, he was this quiet, slightly nerdy kid. He always wore comic book t-shirts. He had spent most of his time on his computer or playing video games with Noah. Kyler had kept telling me that he had a crush on me, and she even begged me to go out with him a few times, but I always came up with reasons I couldn’t. Mostly those excuses dealt with my crush at that time—Drew. Blah. I was so not going to think about that douche when Eli was standing in front of me.
I mean, I enjoyed hanging out with him as a friend, but dating? He was definitely not what I thought my type was. Though, what I thought my type was turned out to be a bunch of jerks, so maybe I should have given the nice guy a chance.
“You okay?” he asked gently, pushing off the railing and taking a seat next to me on the swing. “You seem lost in thought.”
I shrugged, not knowing what to say.
“You don’t remember me, do you?”
“Oh no, I do.”
Writing Can Be Therapy
There are two things I hear most when people talk about Love Found.
1.
Cancer is such a touchy subject, why on Earth
would you write about it?
2.
You wrote about it so beautifully, you must have
first-hand knowledge on the subject.
Statement one is true.
Cancer is a topic most people shy away from. It seems as
though it’s almost taboo to talk about in public, even though it’s everywhere
and has affected so many. But still, you don’t talk about cancer. You just
don’t.
And you definitely don’t write a book where the main
character is dealing with her mom dying.
Nobody will read that stuff.
But you know what, I needed
to write this book. I didn’t care about it being a taboo subject, I didn’t care
that chances were a lot of people who read Choose
Us weren’t going to read Love Found.
All I cared about was writing this story.
It was a sort of therapy for me.
Because you see, the second statement is also true.
I lost my mom to cancer when I was ten years old. All of my
childhood and all that I remember about her revolved around cancer. And I am
100% sure I kept feelings about that buried for many years.
This is the story my brain needed me to write. And I don’t
think I realized just how much I needed to write it, until I was almost done.
I wouldn’t go as far to say this story was
semi-autobiographical, because Haley is way cooler than I ever was and my life
has zero parallels with hers, except for the mom thing.
But I would say, this is what I would have wanted to happen, had I lost my mom at 22 and not 10.
But I would say, this is what I would have wanted to happen, had I lost my mom at 22 and not 10.
As a ten year old, you don’t really grasp everything that is
going on….and you definitely don’t grasp the reality of everything in your life
that will happen without your mom there.
When you’re ten, it’s even hard to grasp on to the fact that
your mom is dying.
And of course, I kept any feeling buried deep.
Love Found was an
ode to everything that I missed out on. It was everything I wish I could have
done/said to my mom before she passed.
It was my mind playing out what I would have done if I was older and given the time to say goodbye.
It was my mind playing out what I would have done if I was older and given the time to say goodbye.
But this is also
two-fold now. Not only was I writing it from a daughter’s perspective, but I
also wrote it from a mother’s view. How would I want my daughter to deal if I was dying? What advice would I give
to her, knowing I only had a few moments like that left? How to make sure my
daughter won’t shut people out and pretend to be strong on her own?
So while writing this book was therapeutic for me, I also
had the hope that someone who was maybe in the same situation would pick it up,
and maybe in some small way it could help them cope with everything that was
happening in their life.
If there is one thing I learned from my mom’s death, is that
it does get better. And you are capable of moving on with your life.

Meet the Author's Dream Cast!
I started thinking about who to cast as Nathan and Abby
before I even started writing the book and I KNOW I have the perfect Nathan.
The best part? He can already sing.
Does anyone recognize him? It’s Nathan Sykes from a boy band
called The Wanted. You might know their songs, I Found You, Chasing the Sun,
Glad You Came, and Walks Like Rihanna. They even had a reality show called The
Wanted Life.
Before you ask, of course I watched the show! I freaking loved it!
Nathan is sooooo adorable, has a British accent, and some pipes, too! Check out
this live performance from YouTube: https://youtu.be/iRhUoTj6YTg
You can watch the whole thing OR skip to 3:00 in and watch the boy sing.
A
little background info (Because I will never miss an opportunity to gush about
boy bands!), the reason why this performance from The Wanted was so special is
because Nathan had throat surgery (Scary!), and this was his first show back.
Since The Wanted broke up, Nathan Sykes has gone solo and
has a few singles out. Don’t worry, my Nathan will never go solo! J But, you should check
out Nathan Sykes’ new music because he’s a tremendous singer!
Okay, wow, I just fell down a Nathan Sykes YouTube black
hole! Let’s get to Abby before I waste the entire day! J
It’s Caroline from The Vampire Diaries! AKA Candice Accola.
This pic of her completely embodies how I pictured Abby in my head. She’s even
got her hat on!! And seriously, don’t they make the cutest couple??
I’m totally shipping them in real life!
