No Promises
by N. Raines
Publication Date: January 2016
New Adult, Romance
In high school, Sam Pennywell had a massive crush on Rick Russo. But he was her cousin’s boyfriend and strictly off-limits. Meeting Rick again years later, she can hardly recognize the man he’s become.

As a paramedic, Rick’s career is all about helping others. But in the line of duty, he’s become one of the injured. He’s caught in a dark place he can’t escape on his own. He can't make Sam any promises of love. Promises are too easily broken.

Sam spends her life taking care of sick and homeless animals. She's never met a stray she didn't love, and Rick is the most important rescue she'll ever make.

DISCLAIMER: I received a review copy of this book (via XpressoBookTour) in honor of this blog tour. All opinions are my own.

My Review: No Promises begins at a party, where the protagonist, Sam, is overhearing her cousin Britt semi-arguing with her ex, Rick. Britt has long since moved on from her relationship with Rick, so much that she has even crossed to the other side.  (I did not feel comfortable with the fact that Britt is a lesbian. I am sorry, but that is my personal preference. But that aside,) The plot felt a little slow for me at first, but as I got into the next chapters, it definitely picked up.

Sam seems to be . . . I guess you can call her a teen spinster or something. Her dad makes a small remark about a "possible prospect", when she brings a very drunk Rick home after learning someone broke into his place. I really like the relationship between Sam and her father, and how they tease each other. They are all each other has, so its a very sweet touch to the plot. I also love that Sam's father steps in a little later . . . He helps Rick see what Sam is feeling, when the road gets a little bumpy.

Let's not forget that this is NA, so you can expect to have a fair share of . . . YEAH in the story. Sam and Rick have a moment when treating a cat scratch. Wham! Fill the blanks and imagine . . . Or pick up the book and read for yourself. (Hint: That part is in chapter 2-3)

Rick is hiding the fact that something went wrong during his job as a paramedic. Something about a complaint . . . But you will have to read to know for sure what that is, because I am not going to tell you, okay!

Please forgive me for keeping this review SHORT and SWEET, but I feel that if I go any further, I will give the whole book away in spoilers!

My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars, 5 for good measure. I found this to be a great read, once I got over my little speed-bump in the beginning, I really did love seeing Sam and Rick's bond bloom. I felt that Sam's character was relate-able; I really like that Rick was quick to see his behavior towards Sam, at the beginning, was not very cool and that he was a J-ass. (I had to use the word hahaha xD) The tension between them was undeniable. Flow of the writing was good; steady pace plot. I basically went in blind and came out with a keeper.

Rick has brown eyes. I am not going to go crazy with gifs this time, but I think this image fits it really well. Click it to enlarge.
